SATURDAY UPDATE: 1ST XV FINALLY GET A WIN BUT 2ND XV MATCH OFF

Alas the 2nd XV match was cancelled as East Kilbride/Cambuslang could not raise a team, so it was just the the 1st XV who played on Saturday as they took to the road to Irvine for their 5th West Division 1 match.

It was also Alex “Willix” Halliday’s 200th match for the 1st XV – decent shift!

Although the lads had lost their first four matches, they had been very unlucky not to pick up a win or two and/or some more bonus points along the way and it was hoped that the trip to Irvine might get them their first win.

To keep a long story short. It did! #5Pointer!

The longer story…..

1st half and Annan were 10-3 up after 13 minutes. Tries from Ryan Hetherington and James Kirby gave the black and amber a great start.

It was looking like that was going to be the half time score, but on the stroke of half time a converted Irvine try tied it up at 10-10. All to play for then in the second half.

Annan got off to to flyer with Callum “Dinger” Bell scoring not long after the restart. Josh with the conversation. 17-10

Soon after, Mr 200 himself popped up to make it 22-10. Twas Alex’s 103rd try for the club.

So try bonus secured, could the lads hang onto the win?

They could indeed – just!

Captain Andrew “Red Mist” Jancey scored next to make it 27-10, Irvine then quickly made it 27-15.

It then ebbed and flowed. And like the first half, just when you thought that’s how the scoring would end, with a few minutes remaining Irvine popped up with a try to make it 20-27!.

Nervy times but the lads held on.

Final Score: Irvine 1st XV 20 v Annan 1st XV 27

Well done lads!

With 1st placed Allan Glens thumping 2nd placed Stewartry 59 v 0 this afternoon, it just goes to show that Annan are not that far off the pace as the lads were unfortunate not to pick up something from last weeks match v the Glens.

The 1st XV now have a tough home match v Garnock next week at Violetbank. Kick Off: 3pm

Hope to see you there.
