After last week disappointing loss in the Shield, the Annan 1st XV are back to league business as they travel to Lenzie Rugby Club in the 2nd match of their 2019/20 West 1 campaign.

Lenzie are having a decent start to the season with a win in the league and a win in the Shield last weekend. They are currently lying 4th after their one match with Annan 9th after their defeat to Kilmarnock 2 weeks ago.

It’s early days in the league though so a win for Annan could boost them up 4th depending on other results. 2 teams have yet to play a match due to various problems

Against Lenzie, Annan have a pretty good record, winning 6 of the 7 meetings between the clubs since their first match back in 1994.

Annan have never lost at Lenzie but all games have been close – 12-10, 28-17 and 15-12.

Lenzie did win the last meeting between the clubs though back in 2015 when they ran out 19-10 winners.

It will be a tough match and the following week the 1st XV host Stewartry in a West 1/Chisholm Cup 1st leg double header. Another tough match!

It will also be David Wyllies 200th match for the Annan 1st XV when he steps onto the pitch on Saturday. Davids debut for the 1st XV was back in December 2002 v Stewartry. He has scored 19 tries in that time. Nice one Mr Wyllie!

Players to meet at 11.30m for the 3pm KO

Annan 1st XV Starting XV: R Glass, K Warrick, J Crombie, T Sloan, D Nordon, L Johnston, C Bell, S Haren, A Jancey (Capt), A Allison, J Kirby, C Wallace, A Halliday, D Wyllie, J Whiteside

Annan 1st Subs: B Jamieson, C Smith

Alas, a bit like last season, even in week 1 of the new season, only 2 of the 5 scheduled fixtures were completed. Three of the matches, including Annan’s match against Uddingston, were cancelled due to lack of player numbers. Annan did get a 28-0 walkover though and are currently joint top of the league!

The Annan players would have liked the game time though. Hopefully on Saturday, away to Clydesdale Rugby they will be able to start their West Reserve 3 South campaign in earnest.

Best of luck to new 2nd XV captain and vice captain Ben Conroy and Ross Brown.
