STRATHAVEN 2ND XV v ANNAN 2ND XV

WEST RESERVE DIVISION 2
9TH NOVEMBER 2024

Match Report from: STEVE JANCEY

It started with a text from the SRU on Fri evening, stating that not everyone is eligible to play for the mighty two’s these days.

Everything hinges on how many 1st team starts you may have had this season. If it’s over 50% of games then you are not eligible to play.

So with coaches now calculating like mathematicians on nootropics, a new team sheet was sorted out. Some of our players had to reschedule their weekend plans and work commitments. But eventually we ended up with a squad of 18

Annan were pleased to welcome Jonathan Callaghan into the squad at 10 and Lex Stevenson started a new career as a wing forward.

Both of them showed well in the first half with Callaghan opening Annan’s account after a fine solo break.Stevenson followed shortly after and added a conversation.

Thomas Firby was injured (twisted ankle) and player coach Watret went on. The pack responded by playing more steady rugby.

But Strathaven got right back into the match with two good tries and also a conversation. Making the half time score Strathaven 12 Annan 12.

In the second half the team started to gel together well. Centres Ben Conroy and Bradley James were solid in defence and began working with Callaghan, who got more adventurous and started creating scoring opportunities for all to exploit.

Scott Muir came on and was in determined mood. Chasing his own charge downs like an exocet missile. Scattering defenders, who were trying to gather up the ball, in all directions. The only thing that stopped Muir was the dead ball line and a fence.

For the record the second half saw tries by JJ Mackay,Jonny Callaghan (3), Bradley James and Lex Stevenson. Stevenson adding two more conversions.

Strathaven kept going throughout and were rewarded with another try and a conversation.

Final Score: Strathaven 19 Annan 43.

Many thanks to Strathaven for the hospitality and for a good game. Get well soon Thomas
