LENZIE 1st XV v ANNAN 1ST XV
WEST REGION DIVISION 1
14TH DECEMBER 2024
Match Report from: GUS ROBERTSON
The Annan squad travelled to Lenzie on Saturday off the back of a great home win against Dalziel the previous Saturday but all the players expected that in form and 2nd place Lenzie would be a tougher challenge.
Annan on the road this season have not had the best results coupled with the fact the hosts had become a bit of a bogey team over the last few seasons with 6 win in a row so, the Annan lads knew they would have to play at their best to get a result from this match.
And the match started off very well for the visitors as they took the match to the home side and it was no surprise when Ryan Hetherington scored his 10th try of the season as the visitor took an early 7-0 lead. Josh Whiteside with the conversion
A lead they held until the 20th minute when Lenzie hit back with a try of their own.
The match was a tight affair with the both sides creating but not taking their chances.
Unfortunately for Annan, the home side started to exert a bit a pressure and on the 30th minute they crashed over again to take a 14-7 lead.
The scoreline remained the same for the remainder of the half.
Annan were still very much in this match, but with a very boisterous home support behind them Lenzie started to create a few more chances which they finally took.
On the 55th minute it was 21-7, 28-7 on the 65th minute and on the stroke of full time Lenzie score their final try and conversion
Full Time Score: Lenzie 35 v Annan 7
It was one of those matches were one team took their chances well while the other just couldn’t be quite as consistent. With a bit more composure Annan could have come away with some points from this match
Best on the day were Sean Armstrong and Ryan Hetherington who was awarded Players of the Match. Sean picked by his Annan teammates, Ryan by Lenzie.
Coach Juan Phyfer “It was a tough one, we deserved a bit more out of it if I’m honest but can’t fault the boy’s effort at all”
The team are now on their xmas break but return to action on the 11th January when they host East Kilbride at Violetbank. 2pm KO
