ANNAN’S promising campaign in West Division 1 hit a bump on the road in Renfrewshire last Saturday as they suffered a shock loss at bottom of the table Bishopton.
It was the first ever senior meeting between the two clubs and Annan were looking to make it three league wins in a row and maintain their push in the top four of the division.
However, it was not to be as Bishopton backed up their first win of the season the previous weekend with another victory and Annan coach Juan Phyfer said:
“It was extremely disappointing and frustrating. I had warned the boys that Bishopton were in a similar tough spot as we were last season and would be fighting for their lives for a win to get off the bottom and that’s what happened.
“It felt like some of our lads thought they had this win in the bag after the great result against Oban.”
Annan notched tries from Mason Watret and Ryan Glass in the second half, both converted by Josh Whiteside, but had left themselves with too much to do after a poor start.
Phyfer added: “It was very windy conditions and I suppose after being 17-0 down at half-time to fight back to within three and take the losing bonus point was a positive. But overall it was super frustrating.”
The 1st XV now take a break from league rugby for a couple of weeks
