ANNAN WARRIORS v BROUGHTON LADIES.

NATIONAL SHIELD
18TH FEBRUARY 2024

Match Report from: Colin Warrick

The Warriors welcomed Broughton Ladies to Violetbank for the 2nd game in the National Shield league phase, the game also marked the Warriors 100th competitive fixture.

With 30 something former Warriors & a large number of supports cheering them on they kicked off in what sticky conditions following the heavy rainfall in the last week.

The game kicked off at a good pace with both sides trying to gain the upper hand, the scoring was opened by the visitors when from a turnover the visitors kicked ahead & managed to regain the slippy ball moving it wide where one of their strong running forwards burst through the Annan defence to score.

The Warriors replied almost straight away when from a break from centre Hannah Paterson which was carried on by Number 8 Kayliegh Warrick the visitors were penalised & following a couple of quick phases stand off Nicole Barlow sniped over from a ruck to score.

The remainder of the half turned into a battle with both sides running hard & both defences repelling equally hard.

With 5 mins remaining a couple of lapses in the Warriors defence allowed the ball to be moved wide for the pacy Broughton winger to score two quick tries.

Half time score: Annan Warriors 5 v Broughton 17

With both sides fairly evenly matched how the Warriors started would be crucial & with a couple of sets of clean fresh legs taking the field the Warriors opened the scoring with a well worked try when following 3 or 4 phases of carries by the forwards the ball was shipped into the hands of centre Hannah Paterson who crashed over.

Unfortunately, this was to be the last time the Warriors troubled the scoreboard with the visitors scoring two final tries to take the victory.

Final score: Annan Warriors 10 v Broughton Ladies 29

Loads of positives once more can be taken from the game with signs of the continued hard work at training certainly seen.

In attack captain Ashley Clark, number 8 Kayleigh Warrick & new Warrior Ayda Chierchia carried hard with Sword of match went to stand off Nicole Barlow.

In defence Jane Stewart, Lexie Glendinning & Jacky Stitt all stood out with Shield of match going to Megan Cother.

As previously mentioned, it was the Warriors 100th game with a number of the former Warriors in attendance.

In the 99 previous games we have capped 99 Warriors, so it was even more special when our 100th game we capped our 100th Warrior with Warrior number 1 Linden Moffat given the honour alongside current Warriors captain Ashley Clark of presenting our 100th Warrior Ayda Chierchia her match shirt. Ayda also happens to be captain Ashleys daughter so together are the 4th mother & daughter to play for the Warriors, that alongside the 7 sets of sisters shows how much of a family the Warriors are.

Finally a special mention to Kayleigh Warrick, Nicole Barlow & Jane Stewart who also had the honour of playing in game 1 & game 100.
