Match Report from: GUS ROBERTSON
Annan were on the road again on Saturday with a wee trip to current league leaders Strathaven
The lads were hoping to bounce back after two disappointing defeats so far this season but knew Strathaven on their home pitch was always going to be another tough battle.
To keep it short:
1st 20: Tight with both teams’ defences on top. But just as the quarter was ending, the home side got the first try of the match. 7-0
2nd 20: Game opened up a bit; the home side scored again just before the half-hour mark, but Annan hit back minutes later thanks to an Aaron Carmichael try. Josh Whiteside converted. 14-7
It was a great sweeping backs move with Aaron outpacing the home defence
That’s how the half finished. All to play for!
3rd 20: Early Strathavan try, and it was 19-7. And it looked like game over, as in the 60th minute the home side made it 26-7
Final 20: But Annan hit back thanks to a 2nd Aaron try who also converted, another great move very similar to the first Aaron try and ’twas 26-14. 15 mins to play. But not long after, it was 33-14, and it was indeed game over.
It ended 40-14
So unfortunately, another defeat, but still a long way to go for the lads to turn it around. Dig in lads, that first win is coming!
Congrats to Strathaven.
For the record, it was Johnny Callaghan’s 150th cap for the Annan 1st XV in a competitive match (league and cup). Top effort Johnny!
The lads now have a home tie next Saturday against Dalziel. 2pm KO.
