CHISHOLM CUP CLASH FOR THE 1ST XV

To start the weekend off with a bang, Annan 1st XV host Stewartry in a West 1/Chisholm Cup – 1st Leg match.

It might just seen like a couple of weeks ago that the teams met, and that’s because it was! Stewartry came out on top that day 19-11 in the West Shield match to secure their first win at Violetbank over the Annan 1st XV in 15 years.

Stewartry are currently lying in 3rd spot in the West 1 league having won their first 2 matches. Annan are lying in 9th after 2 league defeats.

So a bigger match than usual as Stewartry will be wanting to keep up their challenge at the top and Annan will be wanting to get that elusive win and get their season back on track.

And add in the Chisholm Cup 1st leg to the game, it the biggest match of the season so far for the Annan 1st XV.

Annan have never lost to Stewartry twice in a row since competitive (league, cup and Chisholm cup) matches began between the teams in 1998 and will be up for wanting to continue that statistic on Saturday!

For the record Annan 1st XV and Stewartry 1st XV have met 28 times since 1998 with Annan winning 19 times to Stewartry’s 9

Players to meet at 1.45pm for the 3pm kick off.

A big Annan support to cheer on the lads would as always be most appreciated. There will also be a bar at Violetbank on Saturday for supporters as well as the usual food and snacks available from the Grubber.

Annan 1st XV team: R Glass, K Warrick, R Hetherington, D Nordon, N Coupland, T Sloan, C Bell, S Haren, A Jancey (Capt), H Houdley, J Kirby, A Torbett, A Halliday, D Wyllie, J Whiteside.

Annan 1st XV subs: M Crombie, D Ferguson, J Bigham.

1ST V 3RD CLASH AT VIOLETBANK FOR THE 2ND XV

It might be only 2 matches into the West Reserve 3 league, but already we have a 1st v 3rd clash at Violetbank.

The 2nd XV lie at the top of the league thanks to their impressive 91-7 win over Clydesdale 1st XV last Saturday. Dalziel also have 10 points from their 2 matches and lie in 3rd spot behind Annan due to points scored.

The 2nd XV player numbers were boosted last week by several U18 players who have been cleared to play in the senior set up and it is hoped this, combined with the great start under new Captain Ben Conroy, will mean that the 2nd XV will push on and get back to the glory days of the mighty twos!

Players to meet at 1.45pm for the 3pm kick off.

Annan 2nd XV Squad from: B Conroy (Capt), D Kerr, R Brown, B Sweeney, A Carlyle, D Neil, N Graham, Z Lockerbie, N Carpenter, C Lowther, C Trussler, J Crombie, I Thorburn, D Lockerby, A Carmichael, R Barlow, E Campbell

Plus another couple of names to be added!

WARRIORS TAKE A TRIP TO THE CAPITAL

The Annan Warriors travel to Edinburgh on Sunday to take on 2nd place Heriots Blues Ladies.

The Warriors, after a slow start to the league season, claimed a great win in their last match v Glasgow Uni Ladies and will be aiming to take that form into this match.

It’s Heriots Ladies first season in the league structure but they are no newbies as the team is basically the Murrayfield Wanderers Ladies who competed at the top level on Women’s rugby for many a year. They thrashed Stewartry Sirens last week so it will the Warriors toughest match of the season so far.

After this match though, the 3rd away match from 4 games played so far this season, the Warriors will get a decent run of home matches with 5 in the next 6 matches. The away match being at Stewartry Sirens.

If the Warriors can get a settled team (24 Warriors have been used so far this season) then it won’t be long before they start to climb back up the National 1 table.

Players to meet at 10am at Bank Street for the 2pm kick off.

Annan Warriors Team from: N Barlow (capt), Ashley Clark, M Alexander, J Dalgliesh, L Moffat, M Muir, N Barnes, L Glendinning, A McWilliam, K Warrick, R Peacock, M McGeoch, K Barlow, C Barnes, C O’Connell, E Henderson, K Taylor.

HORNETS OVER THE BORDER TO KESWICK

The U13, U15 and U18 Hornets players are off on Sunday to old friends Keswick Rugby for a Girls Rugby Festival.

The girls will be wanting to continue their great form displayed at Largs a few weeks ago.

After this trip, the Hornets get a tournament closer to home when they travel to Dumfries on the 6th October.

Players to meet as arranged with your coaches.

P1-P7 YOUTH FESTIVAL AT VIOLETBANK

After watching the current Scotland rugby stars at the World Cup (clubhouse open from 8.30am on Sunday), why not wander up to Violetbank to see the future Scotland rugby stars of the 2033 World Cup!

The P1-P7 Tigers are hosting the first of two Youth Rugby Festivals at Violetbank this season. Sponsored by LJ Residential. Many Thanks again for you continued and appreciated support.

Teams from around Dumfries and Galloway and beyond will be arriving at Violetbank on Sunday to show what amazing rugby skills they all have.

It all starts at a slightly later time of 11.15am with parents and players asked to be there from 10.45am to get ready for the days rugby extravaganza.

Also a request, we are looking for volunteers to help with the Grubber and catering.

Also donations of pots of soup/home baking would be most welcome. If you can help, please pop along on Sunday.

U14 TIGERS HOPEFULLY PLAYING ON SUNDAY

The U14 Tigers scheduled match v Newton Stewart has been cancelled as Newton Stewart can not raise a team.

At the time of writing, Tigers coach Calum Heughan is trying to find replacement opposition. Please check Annan Rugby online for confirmation if Calum was successful

Best of luck to all the teams over the weekend.
