PENRITH U14 GIRLS v ANNAN U14 GIRLS
FRIENDLY
26TH FEBRUARY 2023
MATCH REPORT FROM JAMES CABLE
On Sunday 26th February the U14 Hornets travelled to a grey but dry Winters Park, to play Penrith U14 Girls.
It was decided upon that the girls would play 15 a side, full pitch with six in the contested scrums and contested line-outs.
The game consisting of three 20 minute thirds of play.
The Hornets had four girls making their match debuts; Marnie, Calise, Aylish & Kaylin.
The game got underway, Penrith scored their first try in first two minutes followed by another shortly after, converting both successfully. The Hornets responded with two tries shortly after but were unable to kick the conversions. The first 3rd finished Penrith 24 Annan 15
The second 3rd started like the first with Penrith running in a quick try at the start, however the Hornets responded well with some quick rucks and good hands, scoring 3 tries and converting two of them. Taking the lead at the end of the second third Penrith 31 Annan 34.
Going into the final 3rd the lead was to be short lived with Penrith scoring two tries and converting them within the first 5 minutes. The Hornets managed to score another try and the conversion was good but Penrith scored a further two tries taking the score at full-time to Penrith 55 Annan 41
The girls awarded Annan player of the match to Aylish Kerr, her first game for the Hornets and her first ever competitive game!
Although this wasn’t the result the Hornets were looking for they can take a lot of positives from the game, Penrith were a well drilled very capable side with some very physical players. The two sides were evenly matched but the difference of playing RFU U14 girls rules by Penrith to the diluted SRU U14 girls rules by the Hornets showed in experience of scrums, lineouts and multiple players in the rucks.
There’s still lots of work to do but over all a very encouraging performance by the Hornets.
