Match Report from: Coach Neil “Muff” Moffat
Annan Rugby’s first outing of the season was away to a very wet Moffat 10s. Annan were in Pool B against Biggar, Uddingston and Lanark. Each game was only 10 minutes so little time for error and let to some exciting open games despite the conditions.
Annans first game was against Uddingston, coming out on top with Annan showing excellent commitment in both attack and defence.
Second game against Biggar was always going to be the toughest group stage challenge. After the 10 mins of end to end contest the match finished 7 all draw.
The last group game against Lanark was a much stuffier affair, with Annan having little position. When they did have the ball in hand they made it count coming out 7 – 0 winner’s.
Annan now faced Oban in the semi finals of the Cup competition. As expected this was a very physical encounter with neither side giving an inch at the breakdown. Eventually Annan crossed the line with seconds to go putting them into the final against Newton Stewart in a 7.5 minute each half contest.
Throughout the day Newton Stewart looked sharp, Annan knew they would need to play the best performance of the day to win, but after only conceding 1 try on the way to the final confidence was high.
From the kick off Newton Stewart look the sharper of the two teams and took an early lead with a well read interception try. Later in the first half Newton scored a second try by guessing the referee’s decision correctly and caught Annan off guard.
The second half Annan had the majority of the possession and created gaps in the Newton Stewart defence but failed to convert into points. Some very committed defence from Newton Stewart saw them lift the cup.
The whole Annan squad played their part and was a good stepping stone for the season ahead.
Thank you to Moffat for a very well organised tournament and their hospitality.
