Match Report from: Neil “Muff” Moffat
On Saturday, Annan’s first team traveled up the motorway to Bishopbriggs to play second place Allan Glens.
The away side entering the game with nothing to lose with all expectations on the Glen’s boys to pick up the points.
After both sides warmed up throughout the sleet showers they knew it wasn’t going to be a day for the back 3.
Aaron Carmichael stepped into the scrum half role with captain AJ calling off in the morning due to a severe bout of ‘man flu’.
The captaincy fell onto Ryan Glass to lead the lads out. Unfortunately his own game came to a quick end with 5 mins into the game he had to retire with a twisted knee, Johnny Crombie stepped in to the loose head position.
The first 10 mins saw both teams playing very direct rugby and both defences holding strong. However Glen’s took the first blood with an unconverted try out wide. From the kick off Glen’s put Annan under pressure which was called to a halt with an injury to right wing logan Johnstone (another twisted knee with ligament damage).
The remainder of the first half Annan stuck to their task well with strong carrying from No 8 Sloan and Centre Haren. However with players taking further knocks and Glen’s showing their qualities the first half finished 15 – 0.
Second half saw the home side use the wind to their advantage putting pressure on Annan’s back 3 and gaining good territory and scoring at regular intervals.
Annans set piece didn’t perform as well as previous week’s and overall they struggled to match a well organised Glen’s outfit who were deserved winners on the day.
Full Time score: 43 – 0.
Well done to all substitutes who all played their part, Ryan Armstrong in particular also Aaron Carmichael for his first full game for the 1st team.
Annans man of the match was Tam Sloan
Annan certainly got their money’s worth from their physio, Marion this week and she will need to work hard to get everyone fit for the next league match against Stewartry on the 4th of January.
