ANNAN 1ST XV v WIGTOWNSHIRE 1ST XV
NATIONAL SHIELD
20TH SEPTEMBER 2025
Match Report from: CONOR PALMER
The game kicked off under challenging conditions, with a wet and muddy pitch, and more rain threatening as the match progressed. Despite the difficult weather, a lot of hard work went into ensuring the game went ahead, and thanks to all those involved in making that happen.
From the outset, it was clear that this was not going to be a day for free-flowing attacking rugby. Annan worked hard in the first half to put points on the board, securing a penalty from Josh Whiteside and a converted try. Callum Taylor with the try, Josh with the conversion
However, Wigtownshire capitalised on Annan’s handling errors, running in two tries of their own in the first half. Both came from unforced mistakes, with the visitors quick to punish any lapses in concentration.
Half time score: Annan 10 v Wigtownshire 14
The second half saw Annan’s discipline slip, allowing Wigtownshire several penalty kick opportunities. The visitors didn’t hesitate to take the points, adding to their tally with ease. Despite a late try from Annan scored by Aaron Carmichael and converted by Josh, it wasn’t enough to overturn the scoreline, and the home side ultimately fell short.
Final Score: Annan 17 v Wigtownshire 23
While it may seem like a disappointing result, Annan didn’t play poorly. The team’s defensive efforts were a highlight, particularly a massive defensive set just before halftime, when they held Wigtownshire out from 5 metres in what felt like a pivotal moment of the match.
In attack, Annan showed promise, but handling errors cost them several try-scoring opportunities. It’s been a tough day for the team, but there are certainly positives to take away. The boys showed great determination in the defensive sets, and with some fine-tuning in attack, there’s plenty of potential moving forward. While the result wasn’t what the team wanted, it provides valuable lessons to focus on as Annan turns their attention fully to the league
