ALAN ROBERTSON

11TH SEPTEMBER 2025

Annan Rugby Football Club are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our Honorary President, Alan Robertson following a short battle with cancer.

Born in Dumfries, Alan moved to Annan in 1975 and joined Annan RFC as a player. His passion for rugby and the club quickly shone through, leading him to take on numerous committee roles. Elected Club Secretary in 1977, he went on to serve as Vice President and then as President from 1984 to 1999, guiding the club through a period of significant growth.

It was during his presidency that he helped deliver the club’s “Field of Dreams”, the Violetbank pitches and pavilion, officially opened in 1999, which he later described as one of the proudest days of his life. Alan was made Honorary President in 2011.

Even after stepping down from office, Alan remained a constant presence at Violetbank, rain, hail, or shine, supporting every team from Primary 1 to the 1st XV. Known affectionately as Annan Rugby’s “unofficial official photographer,” Alan documented thousands of games, events, and special moments, with his work forming the backbone of the club’s social media presence and coverage in the Annandale Observer. His live match updates, relayed to his son Gus for posting online, kept supporters connected near and far.

In recognition of his and Gus’ extraordinary service, Annan RFC named the Robertson Lounge at Violetbank in their honour in 2016.

Alan’s contribution to Annan Rugby, and to the wider rugby community, is immeasurable. His dedication, humour, and love for the game have left a lasting legacy, not only in the club’s facilities and history, but in the countless friendships and memories he helped create. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Alan is survived by his beloved wife Gina, his children Kirsten, Angus, and Tarn, and his cherished grandchildren Finlay and Maya.

A minute’s applause will be held at the next home game on Saturday 13th September 2025.
