ANNAN U14 GIRLS AT DUMFRIES

MATCH REPORT FROM COACH BILLY HENDERSON

Great day for rugby at at a sunny Park Farm, Dumfries,

With a squad of 14 girls it was decided to play 3 20 minute games at 8-a-side.

Observing a minutes silence before the game to reflect on the passing of our Queen.

Captain Shaenah elected to start with the ball – and we were away.

Final score was 26-16 to Annan. Great work by both teams and particularly pleasing to see the new young members of the team step up to the mark. With Team Manager Terri noting how well Emily Harrison was tackling.

Ball handling along the line at times was excellent. Great to see planned moves getting a bit sharper and working a treat.Some of the girls suggesting advice on how to improve the moves and new ones to try out at training.

Today we used a sweeper for the first time and it did help our defence.

Last few games I have said our performance was 60% of potential. Today it was 70%. Perhaps a bit harsh on the girls when they have just beaten out local rivals but I train these girls every week and know they can get better and hopefully we as a team can continue to improve.

Each week after the game we chose a opposition Woman of the Match. We voted for Louisa Craig. Our own WOM was Anna Canning. Dumfries voted for Megan Hutchison as their Annan WOM.

Next week away to Penrith we will have to adapt our game to counteract the different game rules across the border.

Thanks to Nicole and AJ for helping out today and all the parent and carers for transporting the girls to the game and thanks to the Hornets and also thanks to Dumfries. 

At the game a few ex teammates, ex PE teachers and ex foes all came along to watch a bit of girls rugby. They were impressed. We had a bit of a laugh and joked, reminiscing of the “Good Old Day”.  We all had fun playing rugby for a number of years and still have fun now and all want to give something back to the game.

On the after game speeches, we intend on getting different girls up to nominate the WOM awards.
