EAST KILBRIDE1ST XV v ANNAN 1ST XV.

TENNENT’S WEST DIVISION 1
4TH DECEMBER 2021

Match Report from: Gus Robertson

On Saturday 4th December 2021, Annan 1st XV travelled to South Lanarkshire to take on East Kilbride, in their latest Tennent’s West Regional Division 1 fixture.

After last weeks defeat by Allan Glens it was hoped that Annan could bounce back and get their season back on track with a win over East Kilbride.

History wasn’t on Annan’s side as league wins at Torrance House by Annan are rare occurrences, the last one was back in 2008. Annan had won in 2011 and 2012 though in the SRU Shield.

The last 10 meeting between the team had been dominated by East Kilbride with just 1 win and a draw for the Annan lads.

Unfortunately Saturdays encounter was to be no exception.

East Kilbride dominated the first half and ran in 4 tries, 3 converted to take the half time score to 26-7.

The only highlight for Annan in the first half was a well worked try by Captain Andrew Jancey on the half hour mark. This was converted by James Bigham.

In the 2nd half, the Annan defence tightened and reduced East Kilbride to just 2 tries while Annan scored a try through Ryan Hetherington and 3 points from the boot of James Bigham.

It ended 40-15 to East Kilbride.

A disappointing performance from Annan whose early season form and confidence seems to have dissipated over the last few weeks. Not helped by large breaks between matches and Annan have not had a settled team this season. 32 players have now played for the 1st XV in the first 8 matches.

Hopefully things will settle down and the Annan team will rediscover its confidence and form going into 2022 and the 2nd half of the season.

To end 2021, Annan host Cambuslang on Saturday. Annan have a decent record against the current bottom placed team, but Cambuslang, despite not having any wins this season have started to score for fun in recent matches and were winning last week v Strathendrick before the match unfortunately had to be abandoned due to injury.

Annan will need to be on the top of their game if the want to pick up the 4 or 5 points.

Match kicks off at 2pm and a big Annan support would be most welcome.
